Excerpts from wjol.com:
A tragic mistake led to a lawsuit after an ambulance was sent to the wrong location for a woman in Orland Park. In July 2016, Laurelyn Wagner-Pitts, 60, began experiencing severe breathing difficulties. Her husband, Randy Pitts, immediately called 911, but the call was routed to the Western Will County Communication Center. The address that appeared on the dispatcher’s screen was Lakeview Trail in Homer Glen, not Lake View Court in Orland Park, where the emergency actually took place.
Randy repeatedly clarified the correct address during the call, but the dispatcher initially sent an ambulance to the wrong location. After realizing the error, another ambulance was dispatched—but by that time, Laurelyn had already been without oxygen for 17 minutes. She was eventually taken to Silver Cross Hospital, but she passed away in August after her family decided to remove her from the ventilator.
The family has since filed a lawsuit in Will County Court against the Western Will County Communications Center and the Northwest Homer Fire and Ambulance Protection District, claiming negligence and failure to respond properly to their emergency.
Excerpts from firelawblog.com:
A heartbreaking case has resulted in a legal battle after an ambulance was sent to the wrong address, leading to the death of a woman in Illinois. Laurelyn Wagner-Pitts, 60, suffered a cardiac arrest on July 30, 2016. Her husband, Randy Pitts, called 911 and requested an ambulance from the Western Will County Communication Center. However, the dispatcher initially sent an ambulance from the Homer Fire Department to a different location due to confusion over the address.
After about 10 minutes, the mistake was corrected, and an ambulance from the Northwest Homer Fire and Ambulance Protection District was sent. Unfortunately, by the time it arrived, Laurelyn had already gone 17 minutes without oxygen. Despite medical efforts, she passed away in August when her family made the difficult decision to take her off life support.
The lawsuit, filed by her two sons, Matthew and Eric Schlottman, names both the Western Will County Communication Center and the Northwest Homer Fire and Ambulance Protection District as defendants. The case highlights the critical importance of accurate emergency response and timely medical care.
