Chicago Haz Mat Level 2, 6-14-16

On Tuesday, June 14, 2016, just after noon, the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) responded to a hazardous materials incident at a 4-inch gas main that had been struck by a construction crew in the Loop, near State Street and Madison Street. The affected line was reportedly an old, unused pipeline, but the incident still required a Haz Mat Level 2 response due to the potential risk of gas leakage. Firefighters and hazmat teams quickly arrived on the scene to assess and manage the situation. The area was cordoned off as crews worked to locate and secure the leak. Several photos captured the efforts, showing firefighters in action, emergency vehicles on standby, and a fire chief overseeing the operation. These images, taken by Tim Olk, provide a visual account of the swift response and the careful handling of the situation. Despite the line being non-operational, the incident highlighted the importance of caution during construction activities in urban areas. No injuries were reported, and the situation was eventually brought under control. The event serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for coordination between utility companies and construction crews to prevent such incidents.

Plastic Masterbatch

Masterbatches are mainly used on plastics. The color masterbatch is composed of three basic elements: pigments or dyes, carriers and additives. It is an aggregate obtained by uniformly loading a large amount of pigment into the resin. It can be called Pigment Concentration. The tinting strength is higher than the pigment itself. Mixing a small amount of color masterbatch and uncolored resin during processing can achieve a colored resin or product with a designed pigment concentration.
