Australia will design a smart phone application around urban transit to provide passengers with a platform for real-time exchange of public transport information.
Currently, the University of Sydney is developing this application and is expected to try it on a Sydney bus before the end of this year.
Dr. Claudine Moutou of the University of Sydney said that this smart phone application will provide passengers with real-time information on public transport, including information on congestion, comfort and safety. Through this application, passengers can also remind other people that a certain traffic line is full and there are breakdowns in the traffic. In addition, transportation operators can also connect to the system to respond to passenger needs in real time. For example, using information provided by passengers through RateIT, traffic operators can respond to bus delays in time, understand additional service requirements, and notify passengers. The data collected by the application will help operators study passenger expectations for public transport. This is a win-win situation for passengers and operators.
