Siemens won the "2014 European Smart Metering Technology Award"

Siemens recently won the "2014 Smart Metering Technology Award" in the "Europe Smart Metering Award" held in London. Siemens launched a groundbreaking solution for the deployment of multi-dwelling unit smart meters in 2013. Currently, this technology has been tested and applied in all major high-rise buildings in the UK.

Kevin Tutton, Head of Operations Service Department, Siemens Smart Grid Division, said: “The UK energy market is necessary and urgently needed to develop an effective and safe solution to solve the smart metering problem of high-rise buildings. We are very pleased to receive this award, which is our team’s Proof of the efforts we have made. We are committed to creating and implementing solutions that will help them realize the benefits of smart meters for energy consumers living in high-rise buildings, low-rise buildings and transforming apartments."

In the United Kingdom, about 2.3 million households may be unable to enjoy the energy and cost subsidies provided by the UK smart metering project because of the complex construction environment they live in, such as high-rise building blocks where smart metering is extremely difficult.

The deployment of smart meters requires a suitable communication infrastructure to enable communication between devices, including electricity meters, gas meters, communication hubs, indoor display systems, and other devices that pose challenges for the deployment of smart meters. Normally, the meters are not installed inside the apartment and they are installed in public areas where space may be limited and users may be difficult to access, or may be distributed around apartment buildings.

With the joint efforts of partners, Siemens designed smart multi-dwelling unit solutions. It is a unique total solution for tall buildings. The solution uses a "shared infrastructure" model, as well as an integrated broadband power line carrier communication backbone and radio communication technology that enables a standard smart meter to be installed, debugged, and connected to a WAN gateway.

Through simple installation steps, Siemens can mobilize the wisdom of the building and keep it on standby. Once the multi-dwelling unit is installed with this solution, other smart energy devices can be installed at any time and can be installed with a single smart energy device. It can also be installed at the same time as the entire apartment.

Without this solution, energy providers may be forced to install additional infrastructure and carry out additional construction work, resulting in low returns, high costs, and unnecessary trouble for customers and homeowners.

Siemens smart multi-dwelling unit solutions are flexible and can operate in a single supplier and multiple supplier environments. In addition, it can be adjusted in terms of functionality, extensibility and performance to achieve smooth operation in many countries.
