Weichai Power Switch to LNG Heavy Truck Engine

Weichai Power officially signed agreements with Canadian Westport Innovation Corporation and Hong Kong Pei Xin (China) Investment Co., Ltd. in Beijing to establish a new joint venture, Weichai Power Westport New Energy Engine Co., Ltd. This partnership aims to focus on the development and production of heavy-duty LNG engines for long-haul transportation. The collaboration is expected to play a key role in meeting the growing demand for cleaner and more efficient engine technologies. Under the three-party agreement, the joint venture will invest a total of RMB 150 million. It will specialize in developing and manufacturing high-speed LNG engines using Westport’s advanced high-pressure direct injection technology. These engines are designed to achieve a range of over 800 kilometers on a full fuel tank, making them ideal for long-distance freight applications. Westport will provide all necessary technological support and licensing for its high-pressure direct injection systems. Additionally, the joint venture will have priority access to any future technologies developed by Westport within China, giving it a competitive edge in the market. Construction of the new plant has been largely completed, with most equipment already installed. The facility is expected to produce up to 20,000 high-power LNG engines annually. Previously, Weichai Power had already introduced CNG and LNG engines into urban public transport, power generation, and other sectors, proving their reliability and efficiency. Tan Xuguang, Chairman of Weichai Power, emphasized that environmental protection and energy efficiency have become global priorities. With rising oil prices, stricter emission standards in China, and an increase in vehicle ownership, fuel costs for the transportation sector have surged. As a result, there is a growing demand for cleaner, more energy-efficient vehicles, especially those powered by natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas. According to the National Cleaner Vehicle Productivity Promotion Center, China currently has 185,000 natural gas vehicles on the road, and the infrastructure supporting these vehicles is expanding rapidly. This indicates a strong and promising market for gas-powered engines in the coming years. Weichai Power’s flagship "Lan-Qing" series holds 36% of the domestic heavy-duty vehicle market and more than 11% of the global heavy-duty engine market. Westport brings extensive expertise in clean fuel technologies, including CNG, LNG, hydrogen, and biofuels. Meanwhile, Hong Kong Pei Xin has been a long-term partner of Weichai, handling international sales of new energy engines since the 1990s. This joint venture represents a strategic move by Weichai Power to strengthen its position in the green energy segment and meet the evolving needs of the global transportation industry.
