Weichai Power Switch to LNG Heavy Truck Engine
Weichai Power officially signed agreements in Beijing with Canadian company Westport Innovation Inc. and Hong Kong Pei Xin (China) Investment Co., Ltd. to form a new joint venture, Weichai Power Westport New Energy Engine Co., Ltd. The company is focused on the development and production of heavy-duty LNG engines for long-haul transportation. This collaboration marks a significant step in Weichai's strategy to expand its presence in the clean energy vehicle market.
Under the three-party agreement, the joint venture will invest a total of 150 million RMB. It will focus on producing high-performance LNG engines using Westport’s advanced high-pressure direct injection technology. These engines can achieve a range of over 800 kilometers on a full tank, making them ideal for long-distance transport. The partnership also ensures that the joint venture will have priority access to any new technologies developed by Westport in China.
Westport will provide all necessary technical support and licensing for its high-pressure direct injection systems. In addition, the joint venture will be granted first rights to license other future technologies developed by Westport within China. This strategic move strengthens Weichai’s position in the evolving clean energy engine sector.
Construction of the plant has been completed, and most of the equipment is already in place. The facility is expected to produce up to 20,000 high-power LNG engines annually. Previously, Weichai had already mass-produced CNG and LNG engines for urban public transport, power generation, and other sectors.
Tan Xuguang, Chairman of Weichai Power, emphasized that environmental protection and energy efficiency are now global priorities. With rising oil prices, stricter emission regulations in China, and an increasing number of vehicles on the road, fuel costs for the transportation industry have surged. As a result, there is a growing demand for cleaner, more efficient vehicles. Natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas engines are becoming increasingly popular among Chinese consumers.
According to the National Cleaner Vehicle Productivity Promotion Center, there are currently 185,000 natural gas vehicles operating in China, with infrastructure for fueling expanding rapidly. This indicates a bright future for gas engines in the country.
Weichai’s flagship "Lan-Qing" series holds 36% of the domestic heavy-duty vehicle market and over 11% of the global heavy-duty engine market. Westport has extensive expertise in clean fuel technologies, including CNG, LNG, hydrogen, and biofuels. Meanwhile, Hong Kong Pei Xin has collaborated with Weichai since the 1990s, handling the overseas sales of new energy engines.
This joint venture represents a strong commitment from all parties to drive innovation and meet the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions.
