Robotic EV charger will get a test at Texas airport

A robotic electric vehicle (EV) charger is set to undergo testing at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) over the next few months as part of a pilot program aimed at exploring innovative charging solutions. Developed by EV Charge Safe, this autonomous charging robot, nicknamed Ziggy, is designed to locate vehicles in need of charging and automatically connect to them before retreating to a designated area for recharging itself. Additionally, the mobile unit can serve as a platform for displaying advertisements, creating an additional revenue stream. According to a press release from DFW, this technology will be showcased during five public demonstrations scheduled in the airport's parking lots between May and August. While these events will also highlight other charging innovations such as app-based services and on-demand charging, no specific timelines have been provided for integrating these technologies into regular operations at the airport. The primary benefit of mobile charging robots, as explained by EV Charge Safe, lies in their ability to transform any parking space into an EV charging station. This capability offers significant advantages, including greater flexibility for both drivers and infrastructure planners, while addressing issues like "ICEing," where internal combustion engine vehicles occupy EV charging spots. Ziggy’s design and functionality were recognized by the city of Barcelona, which named it the winner of a pilot project competition focused on EV charging solutions due to its innovative approach and adaptability. EV Safe Charge also markets traditional Level 2 AC and DC fast chargers for commercial applications. Several other companies are concurrently exploring similar robotic charging concepts. For instance, automotive supplier Continental has developed a charging robot that establishes a physical connection with the vehicle. Meanwhile, Stellantis, in collaboration with EFI Automotive, is working on a wireless charging robot that was initially demonstrated alongside Ram's electric pickup truck concept earlier this year. However, details regarding its application to production models remain scarce. This initiative marks another step forward in the evolution of EV charging infrastructure, demonstrating how technological advancements can enhance convenience and accessibility for electric vehicle owners.
