I recently came across some fascinating information about the Lake Bluff Fire Department, which has now been added to our website. This volunteer fire department serves the approximately four-square-mile area of Lake Bluff, nestled along Lake Michigan between Lake Forest and North Chicago. Most of their fleet consists of vehicles from Pierce, with four main trucks and one brush rig built by Danko.
One of the most intriguing aspects of their fleet is how each suppression vehicle carries a unique name emblazoned on the front of its cab. The names are selected through a creative process involving the local third-grade class whenever a new piece of equipment is acquired. Currently, these names include "The Volunteer," "The Defender," "Guardian," and "Centennial Pride."
Among their impressive lineup is Rescue 520, a Pierce Saber model equipped with a squad-style body. This particular rig boasts a rear-mounted 1500-gallon-per-minute pump, strategically placed cross-lays, and a roof-mounted Will-Burt Night Scan light tower. Interestingly enough, all three of Lake Bluff's engines feature a Night Scan system.
Interestingly, at one point, all of Lake Bluff's engines were constructed using Ford C-Series chassis provided by Pierce. Their last Ford C-8000 was delivered back in 1990, marking it as the final such vehicle ever produced by Pierce.
These details provide just a glimpse into what makes the Lake Bluff Fire Department so unique. It's always exciting to discover these kinds of stories within firefighting communities, especially those that maintain strong ties with their local schools and residents.
