Karl Klotz recently shared photos and details about the Thornton Fire Department, another division within MABAS Division 24. This department operates out of a single station and covers an area of 2.4 square miles. With a full-time chief at its helm, the department relies on 30 part-time personnel to manage its fleet, which includes two Osage ambulances, two engines, one 50-foot TeleSqurt, one rescue squad, and a brush rig.
The fleet composition is quite diverse, featuring a mix of manufacturers. Among the four main vehicles, they have one each from Fire Max, Custom Fire, Hackney, and Pierreville (a Canadian manufacturer). One of their engines rides on an International chassis, while their rescue vehicle uses a Ford F800 chassis. Another engine boasts an early Spartan Gladiator cab and chassis, and the TeleSqurt comes equipped with an HME 1871 cab and chassis. All the apparatus is painted red, except for Truck 747, which sports a distinctive teal-green hue. Karl mentioned that there are various theories regarding the choice of color for this particular truck. One story suggests that the color was the result of a contest involving local schoolchildren back in the mid-1990s.
