Karl Klotz recently provided some photos and details about the Thornton Fire Department, a volunteer-driven operation located within MABAS Division 24. This department operates out of a single station and serves an area covering approximately 2.4 square miles. While it has a full-time chief, the majority of its firefighting responsibilities fall on 30 part-time volunteers who man a variety of vehicles, including two Osage ambulances, two fire engines, one 50-foot TeleSqurt ladder truck, one rescue squad, and a specialized brush rig.
One of the most intriguing aspects of their fleet is the diversity of manufacturers represented. Among their four primary vehicles, they boast one each from Fire Max, Custom Fire, Hackney, and Pierreville (a Canadian manufacturer). Interestingly, these vehicles also showcase different chassis types; one engine uses an International chassis, while the rescue vehicle is mounted on a Ford F800 chassis. Another engine features an early Spartan Gladiator cab and chassis, and the TeleSqurt is built on an HME 1871 chassis. All the apparatus is painted red, except for Truck 747, which sports a unique teal-green color scheme. Karl mentioned that there are differing theories behind this unusual choice of color for Truck 747. Some say it resulted from a contest involving local schoolchildren back in the mid-1990s. However, we're keen to hear from anyone who might know more about this decision or has additional insights into why this particular color was chosen. Your input would be greatly appreciated!
Attached below are images of two of their standout vehicles. The first photo shows the Thornton Fire Department's HME Custom Fire TeleSqurt, notable not only for its distinctive teal hue but also for its impressive aerial capabilities. The second image highlights their Spartan Pierreville engine, showcasing another example of the department's eclectic yet effective fleet composition.
