Type E Bearings: Toughness and Economy

From manufacturing to construction, bearings are essential components in almost every industry. However, not all bearings are built the same—especially when it comes to heavy-duty applications that require durability and reliability under extreme conditions. That’s where Type E bearings shine. Designed to handle harsh environments, they roll smoothly even when exposed to dirt, moisture, chemicals, and high temperatures.

One of the standout features of Type E bearings is the use of Timken Tapered Roller bearings as their rolling elements. These specialized bearings are engineered to handle both radial and thrust loads, making them ideal for demanding applications where strength and performance matter most.

At Emerson Bearing, our Type E units are among the most popular choices due to their cost-effective design and long-lasting performance. The secret lies in the housing—constructed from strong materials like steel or cast iron, these units provide excellent protection and support for the bearings, ensuring reliable operation over time.

Two Main Types of Units

Type E bearings come in two main configurations: standard and split housing. Each offers unique advantages depending on the application and environment.

  • Standard Type E Mounted Units — These units feature a solid, shaft-ready housing made from durable materials. They’re perfect for high-capacity applications and can be customized with specialty bearings to withstand temperatures up to 350°F. All units come pre-lubricated and fully assembled, ready to handle radial, thrust, and shock loads. Industries like mining, water treatment, and shredding rely on their strength and efficiency.

With their robust design and ease of installation, standard Type E units are a go-to solution for many industrial applications where performance and reliability are key.

  • Split Housing Type E Mounted Units — Unlike standard units, split housing models consist of two separate halves, offering greater flexibility in tight or misaligned spaces. They can accommodate misalignment of up to ±4° and are available in expansion designs for long linear shafts, ensuring optimal contact and performance.

Split housing units also offer faster maintenance since they allow for easy replacement of the bearing insert without disturbing the base housing. This makes them ideal for industries like forestry, marine, fans, blowers, and cement production, where downtime must be minimized.
