3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 12-22-1989

This particular incident happened on a freezing winter night and unfortunately led to the tragic death of Firefighter Kelvin Anderson from Engine 107. FF Anderson's body was found several hours after the peak of the fire. I managed to upload some pictures I took that night. --- --- Below are some photos I captured at the scene. The first one shows the aftermath of a 3-11 alarm fire that took place on December 22, 1989, where FF Kelvin Anderson lost his life. The second image gives you a closer look at the damage caused by the fire. And here’s a shot of a Chicago Fire Department Light Wagon 916 at the scene. For those interested, more details can be found on fsi.illinois.edu: --- > On December 22, 1989, Firefighter Kelvin Anderson of Engine 107 tragically lost his life while responding to a fire at the Rose of Sharon Church on W. Warren Boulevard. FF Anderson was reportedly crawling through the burning building in search of survivors when the roof collapsed around 7 p.m. It took over sixteen hours for search and rescue teams to recover his body, which was found buried under debris in the church’s basement. Autopsy results showed that he died from asphyxiation and severe burns. FF Anderson was honored with full departmental ceremonies during his funeral, and a memorial plaque was later unveiled at Engine 107’s firehouse in 2001. --- It’s always difficult to hear stories like these, especially when they involve such brave individuals risking their lives for others. RIP FF Kelvin Anderson.
