Operational upgrades include the acquisition of a quint vehicle for Station 7 on the city’s western edge. A quint combines the functions of a ladder truck and a fire engine, offering enhanced versatility during emergencies. Additionally, technological improvements across all fire engines have transformed them into fully functional paramedic units capable of delivering advanced medical care.
The integration of new cardiac monitors has revolutionized the department’s approach to treating cardiac arrests. These devices enable seamless electronic communication with the department's reporting system, while updated protocols inspired by NASCAR pit crews ensure high-quality CPR is administered consistently. Since implementing these changes, the rate of patients returning to spontaneous circulation has risen from 14% in 2013 to 37% today.
The department has also modernized its ambulance fleet, introducing vehicles equipped with power load systems. These advanced systems feature adjustable rails on the cots, allowing for safer and more efficient patient handling. With the push of a button, ambulances can lift and load patients securely, reducing strain on personnel and improving safety.
Looking ahead, Chief Fahy revealed that the police and fire departments are exploring the potential use of drones. While still in the planning stages, this technology could provide valuable support in search-and-rescue missions and incident management.
