I just got this update from Drew Gresik:
Check out these photos from a pre-dawn fire call at 728 N Lotus Avenue in Chicago's Austin neighborhood. The blaze broke out in the attic of an abandoned two-and-a-half-story wooden building. Four hose lines were deployed, with Engine 96 using their deck gun, while Tower Ladder 23 brought out the aerial master stream. The weather conditions made photography challenging—sleet mixed with dense vegetation on the property really hampered efforts. To give you a better sense of how camera flashes work in adverse weather, I've included both natural light and flash photographs.
It's worth noting that this fire occurred while multiple units, including Tower Ladder 14, were still responding to another major incident at 1644 N Spaulding Avenue, which had been classified as a 2-11 alarm.
For those interested in seeing more, a full gallery with additional images will go live on our website this Friday.

Here are some key shots from the scene:
The first image shows the intense flames consuming the upper floors of the structure. You can clearly see the heat distortion caused by the raging fire.
In the second photo, firefighters are working under difficult conditions to control the blaze. Their efforts are aided by the use of heavy streams, but the smoke and falling embers make progress slow.
Another striking image captures the eerie glow of the firelight reflecting off wet surfaces, highlighting the dangerous nature of fighting such a fire in inclement weather.
There's also a shot of the fire apparatus on-scene, their lights illuminating the darkened street. It gives a real sense of the resources needed to tackle a fire of this magnitude.
Finally, one of my favorites is a close-up of the aerial ladder being used to direct water onto the rooftop. This requires precision and coordination between ground teams and operators high above.
These photos provide a vivid glimpse into the challenges faced by Chicago firefighters when dealing with blazes in older residential areas. Stay tuned for the complete set later this week!
