This chilly Christmas morning has seen a persistent fire break out in the heart of downtown Waukegan. Firefighters from Waukegan and multiple neighboring departments have been battling the blaze since early today. If you're out and about, please steer clear of the area around S Genesee and Washington Streets.
Good news came just before 10 AM as our brave teams successfully wrapped up their efforts to douse the flames at 18 S Genesee. It turns out that the building had been slated for demolition as part of the city's initiative to address problem vacant structures. Thanks to the joint efforts of over ten neighboring fire departments and nearly 50 firefighters, plus the crucial support from Webb Excavating, we can breathe a sigh of relief.
Operating under brutally cold and icy conditions, these dedicated professionals managed to keep everyone safe—no one was injured throughout this challenging ordeal. Mayor Cunningham even showed up to personally thank everyone for their hard work on what must have felt like one of the coldest Christmases ever.
