Firefighters pay their respect to CFD FF Edward Stringer – update

Chicago Firefighter Edward Stringer was laid to rest today following a tragic incident where a building collapsed after a fire on December 22, 2010, at 1744 E. 75th Street. Stringer succumbed to injuries sustained during the collapse. The day's events began with a somber gathering at the Blake Lamb Funeral Home in Oak Lawn. From there, the procession moved to St. Rita of Cascia Chapel on South Western Avenue for a heartfelt funeral mass. The final leg of the journey concluded at the Beverly Cemetery in Blue Island, where Stringer was laid to rest. Photographer Tim Olk captured the poignant scenes earlier in the day at the funeral home and later at the church. Out of respect for the family's wishes, no photography was allowed during the burial ceremony at the cemetery. The emotional tribute to Stringer was evident as hundreds of firefighters from Chicago and beyond gathered to honor him. Engine 63, the station where Stringer served, was adorned with bunting and his turnout gear as it played a central role in the solemn procession. As the casket was carried to the engine, members of Engine Company 63 acted as pallbearers, their camaraderie and grief palpable. The Chicago Fire Department Pipes and Drums led the way, accompanied by the Honor Guard, as Engine 63 made its way to the church. Along the route, streets were lined with fellow firefighters paying their respects. Inside the church, Engine 63 stood as a poignant reminder of Stringer's service, with his comrades carefully removing the casket to bring it inside for the mass. After the service, the procession continued to the cemetery, where final farewells were said. A flag from the 23rd Battalion and Stringer's turnout gear were placed alongside Engine 63, serving as a lasting tribute to his dedication and sacrifice. Tim Olk's collection of images beautifully captures the depth of emotion and unity displayed throughout the day. His full gallery is available to view [here](link to gallery). As I write this, my heart is heavy with the loss of such a dedicated public servant. It's moments like these that remind us of the bravery and selflessness of those who put their lives on the line every day. Rest in peace, FF Edward Stringer. Your legacy will never be forgotten.
