After more than two years of construction, the 200,000-ton-per-year methanol plant utilizing coke-oven gas at Yunnan Dawei Coking Co., Ltd. has officially been completed and started operations. The facility successfully produced its first batch of methanol, marking a significant milestone in clean energy development. This is currently the largest methanol production unit in China that uses coke-oven gas as a feedstock, capable of processing over 400 million cubic meters of gas annually.
The project was undertaken by the Second Design Institute of the Chemical Industry, which holds a patented technology for converting coke-oven gas into methanol. According to reports, this is the ninth such installation developed by the institute. The first one was built in Qujing, Yunnan, back in 2005, with a capacity of 80,000 tons per year. Since then, similar units have been constructed in Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, and other regions. However, none of these previous projects reached the scale of the current 200,000-ton-per-year facility.
As a major tourist province, Yunnan has always emphasized environmental sustainability. The Shangma Coking Project has therefore been approached with great caution and careful planning. By using coke-oven gas to produce methanol, the company is turning waste into a valuable resource. This not only maximizes the utilization of local resources but also supports eco-friendly development. The project highlights the balance between industrial growth and environmental protection, contributing to Yunnan’s commitment to green and sustainable practices. As a result, Yunnan Dawei Coking Co., Ltd. has been recognized as one of the "Top 50 Chinese Green Energy Companies."
