In 2024, the high-performance automatic biochemical analyzer project developed by Mairui (Mindray) was honored with the National Science and Technology Progress Award, showcasing the company's cutting-edge technological capabilities in critical medical equipment areas. According to officials from Mindray's President Office, the project not only filled a significant gap in China's high-end medical device market but also achieved successful industrialization and mass production. Over the past few years, the product has generated economic benefits exceeding 300 million yuan.
Founded in 1991, Mindray began as a foreign agent and quickly grew into a major player in the medical equipment industry. In its first year, the company recorded sales of over 10 million yuan. From there, it embarked on a journey of independent research and brand building. In 1992, Mindray launched its first self-branded product — the blood oxygen saturation monitor — the first such device in China with full intellectual property rights. Since then, the company has developed numerous innovative products, including China’s first B-ultrasound machine and various monitoring systems. It has created more than 20 “China’s No. 1†products and is now the largest exporter of medical equipment from China.
In 2006, Mindray made history by listing on the New York Stock Exchange, becoming the first Shenzhen-based company to do so. The company's success in both domestic and international markets has earned it widespread recognition. That same year, Xuhang, founder and chairman of Mindray, was awarded the "Shenzhen Mayor Award" for his contributions. Additionally, Mindray's BS300 automatic biochemical analyzer won the city's top scientific and technological progress award. More recently, the company's project on "High-performance Automatic Biochemical Analyzer Key Technology and Series Product R&D and Industrialization" was jointly awarded the National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize alongside projects from Huawei and ZTE.
The winning project falls under the field of in vitro diagnostic instruments, integrating multiple disciplines such as optics, precision machinery, electronics, fluid dynamics, thermal engineering, clinical biochemistry, medical testing, automation, and computer software. After eight years of dedicated R&D, the project holds complete independent intellectual property rights, with 49 patents already authorized and many more in the application process. Among them are four U.S. invention patents and 11 national invention patents.
Mindray's fully automatic biochemical analyzer has achieved impressive market performance. Recently, the company introduced three product series, including the BS-300 and associated reagents, based on the results of this R&D project. These products have been successfully sold in over 40 countries and regions, generating more than 300 million yuan in revenue. Looking ahead, the company expects this industrial project to achieve sales of 1.5 billion yuan within the next three years.
