Obesity May Affect Breast Cancer Treatment

If the patient is obese, a new study that finds common breast cancer treatment for postmenopausal women may not be effective. Postmenopausal breast cancer patients should take encouragement of inhibitors and reduce estrogen production, which means that fewer hormones stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells. But Oakland University professor Mark Elwood said that because they have inhibitors of peripheral adipose tissue produced by multiple enzymes, estrogen may be less effective for obese women. He recently reviewed eight earlier studies to determine the effect of breast cancer treatment on obese patients.
Inhibitors are prescribed for all patients at a fixed dose, but Dr. David Porter said that it is worth studying if a high dose would be more effective for obese women. He said that doctors should focus on more personalized treatment and patients who do not respond to conventional treatment. More research is needed for different types of inhibitors and it will be better for obese patients, they said. Earlier studies also showed that obesity increases the risk of breast cancer.
