Fire Museum of Greater Chicago

On Saturday, the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago opened its doors for a special preview, giving visitors a glimpse into the progress made so far. Although the museum is not yet fully open and still has work to be done, the effort put in has already made a strong impression. Over 70 guests came through, exploring an Ahrens Fox pumper, various static exhibits such as historic uniforms, buckets, helmets, scale models, an old fire alarm board, artwork, and photographs. The building itself looks fantastic, with its red bay doors adding a striking touch to the exterior. The 5-11 Club Canteen provided snacks and refreshments, including homemade pastries that were a hit with attendees. Steve Redick was on site with his camera, capturing several moments from the event. His photos, along with those from other contributors, offer a visual look at the museum's growing collection and the enthusiasm of the community involved. One of the standout features is the historical painting now part of the museum’s collection, which gives a nostalgic view of the fire service’s past. A vintage status map from the Englewood Alarm Office also drew attention, showing how communication systems have evolved over time. Visitors were also able to see the amplifier panel that Steve once used during his time at the Englewood Alarm Office, a piece of history now preserved for future generations. The building, which was once the home of Engine 123, has been carefully restored, and the stonework on the exterior is a testament to the care taken in the renovation. With each step forward, the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago moves closer to becoming a lasting tribute to the brave men and women who have served in the fire department.
