Voith Siemens Hydro, a global leader in hydropower equipment manufacturing, recently announced that the first runner for the Longtan Hydropower Station's Phase I project has been successfully completed and passed inspection by Longtan Hydropower Development Co., Ltd. The unit is now ready for installation and commissioning. This marks a significant milestone in one of China’s largest hydropower projects.
The Longtan Hydropower Station, located in the upper reaches of the Hongshui River in Guangxi, is the second-largest hydropower project in China after the Three Gorges Dam. With a total installed capacity of 6.3 million kilowatts, it features nine 700,000-kilowatt mixed-flow turbine generator units. Construction began on July 1, 2001, with the river being diverted on November 6, 2003. The first unit was expected to go online in July 2007, and all seven units were fully operational by December 31, 2009.
The project consists of three main components: the dam, the underground power plant, and the navigation building. It sets new world records in several categories, including the tallest Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) dam at 216.5 meters high with a volume of 7.41 million cubic meters, the largest underground power plant measuring 388.5 meters long, 28.5 meters wide, and 74.4 meters high, and the highest ship lift system with a lifting height of 179 meters across two levels.
In January 2003, Shanghai Voith Siemens Hydropower Equipment Co., Ltd., along with Dongfang Electric Machinery Co., Ltd., secured the contract to supply seven turbines for the first phase of the Longtan project. Voith Siemens was responsible for the hydraulic design and overall engineering of the turbines, as well as manufacturing key components such as five runners, four turbine seat rings, four water guide mechanisms, and six spindles. They also provided sealing and automation systems for three units.
Industry experts view the Longtan project as a prime example of Shanghai Voith Siemens' technological leadership in hydropower. As the heart of the hydroelectric generator, the on-site processing of the runner represented a major innovation and challenge for the global hydropower industry. With over 140 years of experience in large-scale hydropower equipment manufacturing, Voith Siemens has consistently delivered high-quality solutions. Previously, the company partnered with GE Hydro to supply six 700,000-kilowatt units for the Three Gorges Dam, and it has since secured contracts for other major projects like the Xiaowan and Laxiwa Hydropower Stations in China.
China is rich in hydropower resources, boasting the world’s largest water energy reserves and hydropower potential. The country has made remarkable progress in developing its hydropower infrastructure, and projects like Longtan are a testament to its growing expertise and commitment to sustainable energy.
