The pilot-scale technology development and industrialization experimental research projects for the production of isophorone and MBS series products through acetone gas-solid multiphase catalytic reduction, conducted by the Fine Chemicals Technology Center of Jilin Chemical Group, have officially passed the expert review organized by CNPC. This marks a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to advance its chemical production capabilities.
Isophorone is a key intermediate used in deep processing, known for its strong solvency, excellent dispersion properties, and good leveling characteristics. It finds wide applications in industries such as plastics, pharmaceuticals, and perfumery. Currently, China lacks domestic production of isophorone on an industrial scale. Jilin Chemical Group benefits from abundant acetone resources and existing facilities for producing 15,000 tons of trimethylolpropane and 15,000 tons of methyl isobutyl ketone annually. By adopting a gas-solid phase catalytic reduction process, the company aims to synthesize isophorone and develop downstream products, aligning with broader strategic goals.
Preliminary lab tests have shown promising results, with all product specifications meeting or exceeding those of foreign counterparts. The successful development of this technology will not only fill a critical gap in the domestic market but also drive the growth of related acetone and isophorone-based products, offering substantial economic returns for the company.
In recent years, the rapid expansion of PVC production in China has led to increased demand for MBS resins and their derivatives. However, there remains a significant market gap for high-transparency, impact-resistant, and fold-resistant MBS products. These are currently imported, limiting local supply and increasing dependency on foreign sources.
Jilin Chemical Group has already established a 200L pilot plant for MBS polymerization and a 5,000-ton-per-year production facility. The company has successfully collaborated with Changchun University of Technology to conduct pilot testing on two new MBS products. The quality of these products meets international standards, proving that the technology is ready for further scaling and industrial application.
Once implemented, this project will enable the serialization of MBS products, significantly enhancing the company's market competitiveness and positioning it as a leading player in the domestic MBS industry.
