The Mexican Ministry of Energy has released the official draft standard PROY-NOM-004-ENER-2005, which outlines energy efficiency limits and testing procedures for clean water pumps and electric pumps with rated power ranging from 0.187 kW to 0.746 kW. This document serves as a critical regulatory framework aimed at promoting energy-efficient technologies in household and small-scale industrial applications.
The draft establishes minimum energy efficiency thresholds and maximum energy consumption limits for both household water pumps and electric pumps that use single-phase squirrel-cage induction motors. It also includes specific requirements for public information labeling, ensuring consumers are well-informed about the energy performance of these products. The standard is intended for domestic water pumps and similar electric pumps sold within Mexico, provided they fall within the specified power range.
Notably, several types of pumps are explicitly excluded from the scope of this standard. These include decorative fountain pumps, fire pumps, water massage pumps, jet (injection) pumps, multistage pumps, solids treatment pumps (both surface and submersible), spray pumps, bilge pumps, and swimming pool pumps. The exclusion of these categories reflects the specialized nature of their applications and the need for different regulatory approaches.
This new draft highlights Mexico’s growing commitment to energy conservation and sustainable development. By setting clear efficiency benchmarks, it encourages manufacturers to innovate and produce more energy-efficient equipment, ultimately reducing electricity consumption and environmental impact.
