Diesel vehicles in China remain a polarizing topic, with some viewing them as the saviors of energy efficiency and environmental protection, while others see them as major polluters. Vehicle manufacturers have shown reluctance to shift away from diesel technology. At the 4th China (Guangzhou) International Auto Show, environmental sustainability was a central theme, and diesel vehicles were a key highlight. Companies like FAW-Volkswagen, Toyota, Hyundai, and JAC-Ruifeng all emphasized "energy saving" and "environmental protection" in their promotional strategies.
Huatai Hyundai showcased its advanced CRDi (Common Rail Direct Injection) diesel engine, which combines fuel efficiency with reduced emissions. Compared to traditional diesel engines, this 2.0L engine reduces carbon dioxide by 20%, hydrocarbons by 40%, and particulate matter by 60%. As the only domestic SUV manufacturer with the latest CRDi technology, Hyundai claims that its diesel vehicles use 30% less fuel than gasoline models, with CRDi versions offering an additional 15% improvement in efficiency.
Zhengzhou Nissan also made a strong entrance into the diesel pickup segment. Following the launch of high-end diesel pickups in 2005, the company introduced Ruiqi diesel pickups and commercial vehicles in the national market. This move marked a step forward in the dual-brand strategy of the Dongfeng Group, signaling confidence in the growing diesel pickup market. Major automotive parts suppliers are also showing interest. Delphi, a leading global supplier of diesel systems, has been expanding its presence in Asia for years. With localized production in South Korea and India, the company plans to further increase investment in common-rail injectors, pumps, and high-pressure rail manufacturing in China, South Korea, and India in 2007. Delphi is also building a strong service network, aiming to match the U.S. model of over 400 diesel service centers in China.
Delphi recently partnered with Jiangling Motors, supplying diesel injection systems for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. According to Jiang Jian, vice president of Delphi China, while commercial vehicles in China are mostly diesel, after-sales support is still lacking. Post-warranty repairs are expected to boost demand for specialized service centers.
Bosch, another major player, has also expanded into China, establishing a production base in Wuxi and a technology center in Shanghai. The company is confident about the future of diesel in the Chinese market. Despite current restrictions on diesel vehicles in cities like Beijing, Bosch believes that diesel will play a key role in the country’s automotive future.
Philipp Bach, chairman of Bosch, stated that diesel vehicles currently offer the most mature and practical eco-friendly solution. Volkswagen and Bosch are working together to introduce more diesel models. By 2020, Bosch aims to capture 30% of the Chinese diesel vehicle market, including cars, commercial vehicles, and trucks.
Industry experts agree that developing the diesel market in China requires overcoming challenges in production, transportation, sales, and technical integration. While the path is long, sustained efforts from the government, businesses, and consumers will be essential for diesel vehicles to thrive.
