On September 20, a high-level forum focused on the development of natural gas energy and chemical industry bases in western China—specifically in Sichuan and Dazhou—was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Organized by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association and the People's Government of Dazhou City, with support from the China Chemical Industry News Agency, the event brought together industry leaders, officials, and experts to discuss the strategic development of the region’s energy sector.
The forum highlighted Dazhou’s ambitious plans to establish itself as a key natural gas energy and chemical industrial base in western China. By 2010, the city aims to achieve an output value exceeding 10 billion yuan and generate over 1.5 billion yuan in tax revenue. This vision is supported by Dazhou’s rich natural resources and strategic location.
Dazhou boasts a diverse range of mineral resources, including 763 million tons of coal and 111 billion tons of rock salt. More importantly, it holds an estimated 3.8 trillion cubic meters of natural gas, making it one of China’s three major gas fields. Out of the 112 gas fields discovered in the Sichuan-Yunnan region, 78 are located in Dazhou, underscoring its significance in the national energy landscape.
In addition to its resource wealth, Dazhou serves as a crucial logistics hub in Sichuan and an important distribution center for the Qinba region. The city has also attracted major players such as PetroChina, Sinopec, and Hong Kong Nanyi, further strengthening its industrial foundation.
At the forum, Li Xiangzhi, Secretary of the Dazhou Municipal Committee, outlined the city’s plan to build a modern energy and chemical industrial zone. The initiative will integrate natural gas chemical production, power generation, sulfurization, salt-based chemicals, and coal chemical industries. The goal is to create a comprehensive and sustainable industrial ecosystem.
Several key projects are already underway or in the planning stages. The Luojiazhai Nissan desulfurization plant, capable of processing 9 million cubic meters of gas, is under construction. The Huaxunshan Power Plant, with a capacity of 2×300,000 kilowatts, is expected to be completed soon. The Star Energy LNG project will begin construction this October, while Bayi Power has finalized the feasibility study for a 2×350,000 kilowatt natural gas power plant.
In terms of chemical production, Dazhou has planned several large-scale projects, including annual capacities of 300,000 tons of synthetic ammonia, 400,000 tons of urea, and 1.3 million tons of methanol dimethyl ether. Additional projects include methanol, acetic acid, natural gas to acetylene, PVC, 1,4-butanediol, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) production.
With these developments, Dazhou is positioning itself as a vital player in China’s energy and chemical industries, leveraging its natural resources, strategic location, and growing industrial infrastructure to drive long-term economic growth.
