Chuxing’s waste slag has become a cycle of resources

As of early September, seven privately owned iron ore mining companies and a building materials firm have established themselves near Chuxing Company. These businesses are keen on utilizing the phosphate ore waste and pyrite slag generated by Chuxing, turning these byproducts into valuable raw materials for their own production processes. They produce items such as iron concentrate powder, gypsum boards, and gypsum blocks. In a short time, what was once considered waste from Baozhe Chemical became a highly sought-after resource—referred to as "the prized item." Yihua Chuxing Chemical Company is a key production base for phosphate compound fertilizers and fine chemical products in Hubei Province. This year, the company invested 750 million yuan to construct a new facility capable of producing 1 million tons of high-concentration compound fertilizer, 30,000 tons of salt chemicals, and 50,000 tons of methyl chloride annually. As the scale of its chemical operations expands, it also generates over one million tons of pyrite slag and phosphorus slag each year, which poses significant environmental challenges. In response, the plant has shifted its approach, viewing chemical waste not as a burden but as a "misplaced resource." It has actively attracted external investment by introducing projects focused on resource recycling. For example, the seven private iron ore mining companies that import raw ore use advanced techniques like water separation and magnetic separation to produce iron ore fines, which are then sold to domestic steel manufacturers. Any residual waste after the iron extraction process is further processed and sold to cement plants as an additive. The arrival of these iron ore processing enterprises has transformed Chuxing’s waste slag from a liability into a valuable asset. More importantly, this initiative has created a circular economy model, which not only benefits the environment but also helps conserve natural resources. This innovative approach highlights how waste can be redefined and repurposed, offering a sustainable path forward for industrial development.
