Breton, an Italian company, introduced the ULTRAX 800RT at EMO 2005, the European Machine Tool Show held in Hanover, Germany from September 14, 2005. This innovative multi-functional machine was designed to enhance workpiece flexibility by combining the capabilities of a machining center (MC) with a rotary table. The ULTRAX 800RT is capable of processing complex components such as aircraft turbine blades, automotive parts, and molds, all in one integrated system. Priced at 550,000 euros, it represents a significant advancement in precision manufacturing.
One of the key structural innovations of the ULTRAX 800RT is that the vertical machining center is positioned above the rotating table, which contrasts with traditional configurations. The disc-shaped workholding stage, which rotates to accommodate different angles, is located on the lower part of the machine. This stage is mounted on a cradle-like structure that allows for tilting, giving the machine additional degrees of freedom.
The machine features five axes of motion: X, Y, and Z for linear movement on the machining center side, and C and A axes for rotational and tilting movements on the workholding stage. This 5-axis capability enables more complex and precise cuts without the need to reposition the workpiece multiple times. As a result, operators can complete machining tasks in a single setup, reducing both time and labor costs.
Previously, manufacturers had to use separate machines—an MC and a rotary table—to achieve similar results. The ULTRAX 800RT streamlines this process, making it more efficient and cost-effective. By minimizing machine setups and improving workflow, the machine not only saves space but also enhances productivity.
