Volkswagen Group's world's first direct injection turbocharged gasoline engine was born

The world's first new turbocharged direct injection gasoline engine has recently made its debut. The 2.01 FSI engine is designed for a range of models from the Volkswagen Group, including the Audi A3, A4, A6, and Golf GTI. It has been honored as "Engine of the Year" by 56 journalists from 26 different countries, highlighting its innovation and performance. This advanced engine uses a stratified fuel injection system, where fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber under high pressure through nozzles. This method, similar to the optional air circulation system, helps achieve the perfect air-fuel ratio. When combined with turbocharging, the FSI technology delivers impressive power while maintaining low fuel consumption. MANN+HUMMEL has developed a highly complex intake manifold specifically for this new engine, along with an activated carbon filtration system. This system integrates the intake manifold, gasoline injection, throttle, and activated carbon filtration into one compact unit. It also features a descending piston that optimizes airflow for the optional air circulation system. An electrically driven lever system precisely controls the swirl in each cylinder, while a damper cast onto the steel shaft injector manages airflow within the combustion chamber, ensuring the ideal air-fuel mixture for maximum efficiency and performance.
