China's heavy truck market competition has begun to enter a large tonnage, gentrification

On the 18th, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Dongfeng Motor Corporation, introduced the "Tianfeng Tianlong" heavy truck series, which integrates technologies from Dongfeng, Renault, and Nissan. This move marks its entry into the high-end and heavy-duty truck market in China. This development signals that one of China's top three automotive groups is now fully stepping into the heavy truck sector, and it also highlights a significant shift in the domestic heavy truck industry over the past two years. With growing demand for large-tonnage and premium trucks, more automakers are looking to capture a share of this lucrative market. In April 2004, China implemented the GB1589 regulation, setting strict limits on vehicle dimensions, axle loads, and weight to curb overloaded and oversized trucks. As a result, the heavy-duty truck market faced a major downturn. In 2005, the market saw its first negative growth in eight years, with sales dropping by over 33% year-on-year. According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in the first quarter of this year, total production and sales of heavy trucks were 74,435 and 65,963 units respectively—both declining by 20.38% and 9.1% compared to the same period last year. The market has remained sluggish. However, there's a bright spot: high-end, large-tonnage trucks have been performing well despite the overall decline. In 2005, sales of trucks over 15 tons exceeded 60,000 units, doubling from two years prior. From January to April this year, the trend became even more pronounced, with strong demand for trucks with over 280 horsepower. Industry experts predict that as technology improves and consumer preferences evolve, competition in the large-tonnage and high-end segment will intensify. By 2010, the market is expected to reach 150,000 units, making this segment the most attractive part of the heavy truck market and fueling fierce competition among major automakers. To meet this challenge, leading domestic automakers have launched their own premium truck models. For example, Shanghai Shipbuilding introduced the "Land Fleet," Jinan Heavy Duty Truck launched the "Howe," and Shaanxi Heavy Duty introduced the "Delong." China National Heavy Duty Truck, which has long dominated the market for trucks over 15 tons, is not standing still. Partnering with Volvo, the world’s second-largest truck manufacturer, it developed the FM series equipped with a D12 high-power engine. Meanwhile, new entrants such as Dongfeng, SAIC, and FAW—companies that have rapidly advanced through cross-border collaborations and technological innovation—are entering the market, bringing fresh competition and reshaping the industry landscape.
