Heat pump technology transforms Dalian's primary sewage into new energy

The system works by extracting heat from the sewage discharged through nearby urban pipelines during winter, and in summer, it takes the indoor heat and uses it to cool the building by transferring it back into the sewage system. The technology has been officially recognized by an expert group composed of the Chinese Academy of Architectural Sciences, the Dalian Municipal Construction Committee, and the Dalian Municipal Science and Technology Bureau. It has been rated as “the first in China, internationally advanced,” with significant social and economic benefits. Primary sewage includes domestic wastewater, industrial effluent, and secondary treated water. Untreated sewage contains a complex mix of pollutants, making it unsuitable for direct use. To address this, Dalian Hoko Energy-Saving Air-Conditioning Plant developed the world’s first fully automatic sewage decontamination machines. These systems effectively filter out dirt and debris, allowing clean sewage to be passed through heat exchangers before being returned to the main sewer line. According to reports, the energy efficiency ratio (EER) of untreated sewage systems reaches over 4.0, which is more than 80% more efficient than traditional large coal-fired boilers. Compared to electrical heating methods, it is 3 to 4 times more efficient, and compared to conventional central air conditioning systems, it can reduce operating costs by 30% to 60%. In terms of water conservation, since no cooling towers are used, there is no water evaporation or drift loss, leading to substantial savings. For a building of 10,000 square meters, each cooling season can save over 4,000 tons of water. From an environmental perspective, the original sewage heat pump system recycles waste heat without combustion, eliminating the release of solid waste, toxic gases, and soot, thus reducing the greenhouse effect. In 2007, Friendship Group's Dalian Development Zone Friendship Mall implemented the original sewage heat pump air conditioning system, using untreated sewage from the building's own pipeline as the heat source. During winter, the sewage was heated to warm the building, while in summer, the heat pump transferred the building’s waste heat back into the sewage system to provide cooling. According to the company’s officials, after adopting the system, the mall saved 338,000 yuan in heating costs in winter and 200,000 yuan in cooling electricity in summer. Experts estimate that China's urban sewage volume is massive. In 2006, the total national sewage discharge reached 53.7 billion tons, expected to rise to 73 billion tons by 2010. If the waste heat from these sewages could be recovered through raw sewage heat pump systems, it could potentially meet the heating needs of at least 3 billion square meters of buildings during winter.
