**Interview with Gu Wentao, Deputy to the National People's Congress and Chairman of Jinhua Machinery Group**
During this year’s Two Sessions, we had the opportunity to speak with Gu Wentao, a deputy to the National People’s Congress and chairman of Jinhua Machinery Group. Known for its commitment to independent research and development, Jinhua has played a pivotal role in transforming China’s petrochemical equipment industry from "Made in China" to "Created in China." The group’s four core products have become iconic brands in the sector, significantly boosting its overall strength and positioning it as a leader in the national machinery industry.
Gu shared insights into how Jinhua achieved such remarkable progress. Over the past few years, the company has focused on innovation, completing more than 30 major national and provincial scientific and technological projects. Among these, four received national awards, and 11 earned provincial or ministerial recognition. In addition, Jinhua has obtained over 38 national patents, addressing critical gaps in domestic technology across four key categories.
One of the group’s flagship products is the stirred reaction equipment, particularly the PVC polymerizer. This product now offers a full range from 13.5m³ to 135m³, with 12 patents under its belt. It holds over 85% of the domestic market share. Notably, the two largest polymerizers—those with a capacity of over 70m³—have generated over one billion yuan in revenue in the past three years, contributing 240 million yuan in profits and taxes. The 135m³ PVC polymerizer, developed by Jinhua, is currently the largest industrial-scale unit in the world, ending China’s long reliance on imported large-scale PVC polymerizers. After more than four years of successful operation, its technical specifications have reached international standards.
Jinhua also led the formulation of the national standard for “Technical Conditions for Reactors of Vinyl Chloride Polymerization Reactors,†which is expected to save the country nearly one billion yuan in infrastructure investment.
The state’s strategy to revitalize the old industrial base in Northeast China has provided Jinhua with unique opportunities. Recently, the company successfully developed an ammonia synthesis tower that filled a domestic gap, created a large heat exchanger exported to the U.S., the UK, and other countries, and participated in the national “863†project, as well as the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ coal-to-oil initiative. Jinhua was responsible for the key equipment in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reactor at the plant.
Currently, the group is working on localizing the technological transformation of key equipment for a million-ton ethylene plant and a million-ton PTA facility. Gu expressed optimism about the future: “In the Huludao Beigang Industrial Zone, located in the strategic ‘Five Points and One Line’ area of Liaoning, CNPC plans to build a one-billion-yuan petrochemical equipment manufacturing base centered around Jinhua. The equipment manufacturing industry will surely have a brighter tomorrow.â€
