At the start of every month, a flood of statistical data comes out, with passenger car sales—especially those of private vehicles—drawing significant attention from major media outlets. However, commercial vehicles, which make up 40% of China’s total car sales, have largely slipped into obscurity. They are rarely highlighted in mainstream discussions, despite their substantial role in the automotive industry.
According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, from January to November, the commercial vehicle market sold approximately 2.3 million units. In comparison, passenger cars exceeded 4 million, but the share of commercial vehicles in the overall market remains around 40%, indicating their critical importance to the industry.
In the first 11 months of 2007, the top ten commercial vehicle manufacturers were: Beiqi Foton (369,700 units), Dongfeng (309,100), FAW (199,800), Jianghuai (146,000), Jinbei (125,800), Chunghwa (93,800), Changan (89,100), Jiangling (80,000), Nanqi (68,000), and Shaanxi Auto (62,200). These numbers reflect the steady demand for commercial vehicles, yet they remain underreported compared to the hype around passenger cars.
Compared to the overwhelming coverage of passenger cars, commercial vehicles have become almost invisible in both media and public discourse. Whether it's media attention or consumer interest, there is very little focus on this sector. This lack of visibility is especially concerning given that commercial vehicles play a crucial role in supporting logistics, transportation, and economic development.
One reason for this neglect is that commercial vehicles are typically seen as production tools rather than consumer goods. As such, they don't directly engage the average buyer, leading to less public interest. Media outlets, in turn, tend to follow consumer trends, further pushing commercial vehicles into the background.
Another factor is the lack of proactive engagement from the China Automobile Association. Unlike associations in countries like Japan and the U.S., which provide detailed and transparent data, the Chinese association often lacks consistency. Its statistics can be conflicting, with different sources providing varying figures. This inconsistency makes it difficult for the media to report accurately and for consumers to make informed decisions.
As the most authoritative body in the auto industry, the association should take a more active role in guiding the media and the public with accurate and comprehensive information about the entire market, including commercial vehicles.
Moreover, many commercial vehicle companies operate with a low profile. For example, Jiangling Motors is often considered one of the most promising listed automotive companies in China, while China National Heavy Duty Truck Co., Ltd. has a stock price significantly higher than that of major passenger car manufacturers. This suggests that the true value of commercial vehicles is still largely untapped and deserves more recognition.
