China's first rotating shield plug bearing has been successfully developed

The 3.3-meter-diameter rotary shield plug bearing, manufactured by Liaoning General Machinery Group, has successfully passed five critical tests: appearance inspection, dimensional measurement, cleanliness evaluation, ultrasonic testing, and static testing. It has recently been shipped and is set to be installed in a neutron reactor in China. This significant milestone marks an important step forward in the development of advanced nuclear technology. As one of the key projects under China's National 863 Program, the Fast Neutron Reactor is expected to play a crucial role in future energy production and the recycling of nuclear fuel. The project is being led by the China Institute of Atomic Energy, with China First Heavy Machinery Group Co., Ltd. responsible for the manufacturing of core equipment. Among these, the rotary shield plug bearing is a vital component that must function reliably under extreme conditions. Liaoning General Machinery Group, as a long-standing supplier to China's No.1 Heavy Machinery Group, was selected in 2002 due to its strong R&D capabilities and diverse product portfolio. It outperformed other major domestic manufacturers and became the designated producer for this specialized component. Liaoning General Machinery Group traces its origins back to the Anshan Bearing Factory, which was officially recognized as a key bearing manufacturer by the former Ministry of Machinery. After a major restructuring in October 1998, the company reorganized its operations into a "one factory, three lines" model—focusing on large bearings, oil-free air compressors, and mechanical machining. Over the years, the group has expanded through the acquisition of six companies, integrating resources in personnel, technology, and capital to strengthen its market position. It is worth noting that compared to conventional bearings, the rotary shield plug bearing is designed for one-time use and cannot be replaced once installed. This means that every aspect—from material selection to design, manufacturing, and installation—must meet extremely high standards. A rigorous quality assurance system ensures precision and reliability before deployment. Following the signing of the contract and quality assurance agreement in 2002, the bearing entered the design and production phase. With continuous technical support from experts at the China Institute of Atomic Energy and China First Heavy Machinery Group, and the dedicated efforts of Liaoning General Machinery Group’s staff, the project was ultimately completed successfully.
