International Diesel Forum urges China to account for 30% of diesel vehicles for 20 years

China's Development Research Foundation recently hosted the "Building a Conservation-Minded Society and Traffic Energy-Saving - International Diesel Development Forum" in Beijing, drawing attention to the potential of diesel technology in reducing energy consumption and oil dependency. The forum emphasized that increasing the share of diesel passenger cars to 30% by 2020 could save 28.37 million tons of crude oil and cut carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 42 million tons. According to a report from the State Council’s Development Research Center, diesel vehicles consume 30% less fuel than gasoline models. If China promotes diesel vehicles more aggressively, it could reduce its oil import dependence by 10% by 2020. Currently, diesel vehicles make up 23.7% of total car ownership, but only 0.2% of new passenger cars. With projected car ownership reaching 130 million by 2020, boosting diesel adoption could significantly impact energy security and environmental goals. Sinopec expressed readiness to launch clean diesel at any time, but stressed the need for clear policy guidance. The forum, held at the prestigious Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, featured high-level government officials and was initiated by the State Council Development Research Center in 2005, with Sinopec as a key sponsor. The report outlined four key recommendations: first, promoting advanced diesel vehicles in the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan"; second, reforming taxation to favor fuel-efficient diesel cars; third, improving diesel quality to meet European standards; and fourth, enhancing R&D capabilities in diesel technology. China currently has seven major diesel engine manufacturers, with strong domestic R&D capabilities. Bosch also announced a partnership with Wuxi Weifu Group to develop a domestically produced heavy-duty diesel engine equipped with the Bosch common rail system. This engine meets Euro 3 standards and can be upgraded to Euro 4 and Euro 5 levels, offering improved efficiency and lower emissions. Globally, the shift toward diesel vehicles is gaining momentum. In Europe, over 50% of new passenger cars are now diesel, while in the U.S., diesel vehicle sales have risen by 56% in the past five years. The U.S. government has also shifted its stance, aiming to increase diesel car use to 20% to save 300,000 barrels of oil daily. Tax incentives and lower diesel prices in South Korea have also driven diesel adoption, despite higher upfront costs. With growing global interest and technological advancements, diesel vehicles are becoming an important part of the future transportation landscape.
