The rise of Shouguang Bohai Chemical Park in Saline Beach attracts many companies

Shouguang City, located in Shandong Province, has made strategic use of its northern saline-alkali wastelands to establish a chemical industry park along the Bohai Sea. This initiative is drawing increasing attention from businesses due to its strong regional advantages, abundant natural resources, and favorable investment environment. According to reports from an interview, on September 23, three foreign chemical companies officially set up operations in the park. To date, over 30 chemical enterprises—both domestic and international—have invested in the area, with 10 of them having capital exceeding 100 million yuan. The city’s central location on the Shandong Peninsula provides access to vast, underutilized land, which is flat and sparsely populated, offering great potential for future development. The region is well-connected by both water and land transport, and it serves as a key salt production base in China, with an annual output of 3 million tons and underground brine reserves of 4 billion cubic meters. Additionally, the area is rich in oil and natural gas resources, making it ideal for the growth of salt-based and fine chemical industries. At the start of this year, Shouguang launched the vision of "mobilizing the entire city to develop a high-quality chemical industry in the Bohai region." Drawing inspiration from successful models like the Shangyu and Yuyao industrial zones in Zhejiang, the park emphasizes the construction of new urban districts and eco-friendly industrial areas. It was planned by the Zhejiang University Planning and Design Institute, and currently includes five major industrial zones: salt chemicals, petrochemicals, environmental protection and energy conservation, marine biology, and new materials, along with two residential communities. To ensure sustainable and high-quality growth, the city is balancing rapid development with ecological protection. A wetland reed-based sewage treatment plant, located 3.5 kilometers from the park, has been built using local reed resources. An investment of 150 million yuan is planned for the second phase, which will increase daily sewage treatment capacity to 120,000 tons—making it the largest county-level facility in Shandong. Moreover, 10,000 mu of reed wetlands are being used to treat wastewater and transform saline-alkali land, boosting eco-tourism in the region. Li Huagang, deputy mayor overseeing the development zone, stated that the framework of the Bohai Chemical Industry Park is taking shape, with infrastructure now in place. The city is focusing on improving service awareness and building a better business environment, preparing for the next wave of development. Once completed, the park is expected to become a new economic engine driving growth in Shouguang.
