The 9L21/31 diesel engine, a well-received model, was successfully developed by Shaanxi Diesel Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. The first four generator sets equipped with this engine have been completed and delivered to Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group Co., Ltd. This milestone marks the beginning of using domestically produced generator sets in the export of 4250TEU container ships.
In recent years, as the shipbuilding industry accelerated its development, the group focused on enhancing the manufacturing level of marine auxiliary products. To improve the localization rate of ship equipment, in early 2004, CSIC signed a production license agreement with German MAN & Wärtsilä (MANB&W) and decided to introduce four types of marine auxiliary engines, including the L21/31 series. These engines were designated for production at Shaanxi Chai Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. As a key product of MANB&W, the L21/31 series is known for its advanced technology, compact design, and high reliability. It is one of the most popular models in the global marine auxiliary engine market and has extensive applications in both land and marine power generation, offering promising market potential.
Following the signing of the license agreement, the localization of the 9L21/31 diesel engine at Shaanxi Heavy Industry was completed by the end of April 2006. After assembling and commissioning the first unit, it successfully passed the Lloyd’s Register (LR) approval on June 11, gaining recognition from both the classification society and the user.
While working on the localization of the L21/31 engines, Shaanxi Chai Heavy Industry actively explored market opportunities, aiming to bring marine auxiliary products into the market quickly. With strong support from CSIC, the company signed a contract with Dalian Shipbuilding Heavy Industry in early 2005 for the supply of 40 sets of 9L21/31 diesel engines for the main generator sets of 10 4250TEU export container ships. To date, Shaanxi Chai Heavy Industry has supplied over 100 sets of marine auxiliary engines, including 72 L21/31 units. Marine auxiliary machinery has now become a new economic growth driver for the company.
The successful development of the 9L21/31 diesel engine signifies that Shaanxi Chai Heavy Industry has transitioned from a single focus on mainframe production to a balanced strategy of producing both main and auxiliary engines. This shift reflects the company's efforts to adjust its product structure and business strategy. At the same time, it highlights the progress made by China Shipbuilding Heavy Industry in improving the localization rate of ship supporting equipment through a combination of independent innovation and technology introduction.
